Chai
The first tea drinkers, Chinese, called tea T'cha or Cha. When tea was first grown commercially in India, the industry depended heavily on Chinese growers who introduced the term Cha that the English tea plantation owners pronounced Chai.
Chai is a centuries old beverage that has played an important role in many cultures. What most people think of as Chai is more appropriately termed Indian styled Masala Chai, strong black tea blended with masala (any spice mixture), served with milk and sugar.
Devotees of chai describe its many health benefits: its warming, soothing effect, its beneficial influence in digestion, its aid to one's general sense of well-being. Indeed, Ayurvedic literature assigns multiple beneficial effects from chai. However, the real reason to enjoy chai is its taste.
Health conscious Westerners sometimes try to drink chai unsweetened. Sorry, that's like taking a bath with your socks on. The sugar or honey are necessary to the chai experience as they unleash the flavours of the masala spices. Go ahead, indulge yourself. The benefits of chai far outweigh the spoonful of sugar that awakens the the spices.
